چکیده

INTRODUCTION Aortic elastic properties are markers and prognosticators of cardiovascular risk. Smoking adversely affects arterial elastic properties. The acute and chronic effect of cigarette smoking on the elastic properties of the ascending aorta has not been determined. METHODS The chronic part of the study included 130 healthy male subjects (age 38.1+/-8.9 years, 85 smokers and 45 non-smokers) with no other risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Twenty of the smokers (age 40.0+/-4.2 years) were also included in the acute study. In the acute study each subject was studied on two occasions: one while smoking one cigarette and the other during sham smoking. Ascending aortic distensibility was assessed by two-dimensional, guided, M-mode transthoracic echocardiography of the aortic root at baseline and at the end of smoking. In the chronic study the association was assessed between smoking status and ascending aortic distensibility. RESULTS Smoking acutely increased systolic, diastolic, and pulse pressure. Furthermore, smoking decreased ascending aortic distensibility (by 0.53+/-0.86 cm(2) x dyne(-1) x 10(-6), p<0.05). The chronic study showed that smokers had greater ascending aortic distensibility than non-smokers (2.22+/-0.93 vs. 2.75+/-1.07 cm(2) x dyne(-1) x 10(-6), respectively, p<0.05). Aortic distensibility was independently associated with smoking (beta=-0.293, p<0.001) after controlling for possible confounders. No association of aortic distensibility with the intensity or duration of smoking was observed within the group of smokers. CONCLUSIONS Cigarette smoking results acutely in a deterioration of ascending aortic elastic properties in healthy male subjects. On a chronic basis, smokers have decreased ascending aortic distensibility compared to non-smokers. This effect of smoking on aortic distensibility is not related to dose or duration.

The Acute Effect of Passive Smoking on QT Dispersion in 95 Healthy Men

Background: Passive cigarette smoking is a known cause of a variety of diseases.  However, most of the studies done in this field have focused on its chronic effects on human health.  Studies considering the acute effect of smoking on QT dispersion, on the other hand, with its known predictive role in the occurrence ventricular arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death are sparse. Objectives: This st...

The Acute Effect of Cigarette Smoking on QT Dispersion

Background: Cigarette smoking has several known detrimental effect on cardiovascular system.  QT dispersion (QTd) is among the important predictors of cardiac death. Objective:  To assess the acute effect of smoking of a single standard cigarette on QT and QTc (corrected QT) dispersion, hence on the risk of ventricular arrhythmias in healthy smokers and non-smokers. Methods: 111 healthy men wit...

Assessing the Effect of Opium Dependence on Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) in Men

Abstract Background: Opium-dependence having different effects on the nervous system is a common problem, especially in the Middle East and Iran. The aim of this study is evaluating the effects of opium-dependence on visual evoked potential (VEP) in men. Methods: Thirty subjects with both chronic cigarette smoking and opium-dependence (group 1) and 30 subjects with only chronic ciga...

Determination of Total Antioxidant Capacity in Saliva of Smokers and Non-smokers with Chronic Periodontitis

Background: Periodontal diseases in smokers are 2.6 to 6 times higher than non-smokers and their response to treatment is much lower. Reducing levels of antioxidants and consequently increasing oxidative damage in the pathogenesis of periodontitis is effective. Regarding the importance of free radicals in the pathogenesis of periodontal diseases, the aim of this study was to investigate the eff...

Effect of smoking on arterial stiffness and pulse pressure amplification.

The brachial artery pressure waveform is abnormal in smokers, but the effect of smoking on the aortic pressure waveform in both smokers and nonsmokers, particularly in the younger population, is unknown. We compared the acute and chronic effects of smoking on large-artery properties in 185 healthy young smokers and nonsmokers (mean+/-SD, 22+/-5 years). We matched 41 chronic smokers for age, hei...
